In October I joined a portrait workshop at Foto Meyer during Foto Tage, and I got to work with Helena Wedekind.
Helena wore all black, and she has sharp features. The buildings around us felt grand and heavy. Together that made me think of power, so that became our theme.
I wanted her to be above us, so I shot almost every photo from below, on an 18mm lens. When you look up at someone, they're the one in charge, and that's how I wanted you to see Helena.
The wide lens also makes the columns, arches and ceilings lean in around her, so the buildings feel even bigger and she still stands over them.
It was only my second time shooting with a manual lens. I really enjoyed it, because it made me slow down and think about every photo before I took it.
I enjoyed working with her a lot. She was easy to direct. A small note from me changed the whole photo.
These are all 15 photos from that afternoon, grouped by where we were.
